TCML family came together for a wonderful gathering, creating an opportunity to share the unique TCML experience with our loved ones.
TCML-GMA hosted a cultural event that was presented by the Splendor of Taiwan group from Houston. The event introduced two Festivals: the Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋節 (zhōng qiū jié) and the Double-Ninth Day 重陽節 (chóng yáng jié).
The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar, falls on September 17 this year. In Taiwan, people typically gather with family and friends to enjoy barbecues, eat mooncakes and pomelos, and admire the full moon. Have you seen the “Supermoon”, which is 7% larger than usual on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival this year? The astronomical phenomenon of Saturn conjunct the moon also occurred. Next to the full moon the Saturn was visible to the naked eye!
The Double Ninth Festival is a time to honor ancestors. Traditions include climbing mountains, drinking chrysanthemum liquor, and wearing the zhuyu plant (Cornus officinalis). Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are believed to have cleansing properties, often used to purify homes and treat illnesses. In the event, we made the chrysanthemum tea 菊花茶 (jú huā chá) to share with all friends.
Participants also had the chance to take part in a hands-on activity by making Chongyang Cake 重陽糕 (chóng yáng gāo). Chongyang Cake is a traditional dessert eaten during the Double Ninth Festival, made from steamed sticky rice layered with chestnuts and almonds. The word for “cake” (糕, gāo) sounds like the word for “height” (高, gāo) in Chinese, symbolizing good fortune.
Students, teachers, and staff enjoyed preparing this festive treat together, gaining a deeper connection to both the language and culture.
